How do you usually get to work? Why did you decide to commute this way?
My main (and my favorite!) commute mode is by bike! I’ve always commuted by bike, going back to commutes to class in college.

How long have you been using this commute option?
In Vancouver I have been biking to work ever since I started my job, nearly three and a half years ago. But I’ve been bike commuting since my days as an intern in 2016 a different Vancouver (Canada)!

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?
It’s a 15 mile, roughly hour-long commute from SE Portland all the way to Vancouver.

What is your favorite thing about your commute?
I love seeing all the different neighborhoods, watching the leaves change color, seeing flowers, bike busses, dogs – all of it!

What is a challenge of your commute? How have your overcome that challenge?
Safety is a huge concern for me (and I think a lot of people, which is what stops them from riding altogether). I’m a pretty confident cyclist (in a safe way!) and so when I see something that scares me (cars ignoring stop signs, or I read that there was a fatality) I’ll change my route. My route has changed a lot over the years, and on different days in different conditions I alter my route. The relatively flat topography, connected street network and abundance of bike routes make this possible!

Tell us a favorite or interesting commute story.
Portland is a great city to cycle in because for the most part folks here are kind and respectful. They stop to let me cross busy streets which I can’t thank them enough for.

How does your commute help you save time and/or money?
While it doesn’t save me time it totally makes my commute predictable. When I drive the commute can take twice as long sometimes, which really frustrates me. In terms of money, since I drive an old car with horrible mileage, I spend way less money on gas.

How does your employer help accommodate your commute?
My work has a shower which is essential!

Do you have any advice for someone looking to use a climate-friendly commute option?
Pack a good attitude, check the weather, invest in good gloves and lights.
