How do you usually get to work? Why did you decide to commute this way?

I carpool with my partner. We share a single vehicle and they work in Portland. They drop me off on their way to work and pick me up on the way home. About a year ago my partner purchased a hybrid plug in so now our vehicle runs on electric in town and they don’t feel guilty dropping me off and picking me up on days they telework.

How long have you been using this commute option?

I started using the bus pass option in 2020 but cancelled that when things shut down. I rejoined in 2023 so about a year and a half.

How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way?

We live about 3 miles away. If we drive, it is a 10–15-minute drive either way. If I take the bus, it is about 45 minutes each way.

What is your favorite thing about your commute?

Saving money!

What is a challenge of your commute? How have you overcome that challenge?

When my partner leaves town for work. I decided to take the bus as it is less expensive than parking.

Tell us a favorite or interesting commute story.

One day my partner was working a bit late and I ended up taking the bus home. They work in Portland and left work about the same time I did to drive home. I work in Vancouver and took the bus. I won. 😊

How does your commute help you save time and/or money?

We don’t have to buy a second car which saves us thousands, plus insurance, gas or electricity and paying for parking.

How does your employer help accommodate your commute option?

They participate in the commute reduction program which offers rewards for commuting! They have bus ride passes available in case your normal commute option is not available. That helps alleviate any carpool anxiety.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to use a climate-friendly commute option?

If you are looking to move, check out your commute options beforehand. We weren’t planning to move when we did but we lucked out and found a place with rent in our price range that is a single bus ride to work (no transfers).
